Taylor must have secured the snipers, because I didn’t see any as we made our way to the shipping container holding my ex-lover. By this time, I was getting used to following Bailey’s menagerie. They were the best secret weapon we had. No one expects animals to think, to lead, to do what Bailey asked them to do, and right now, this big dog was waiting in front of a small fishery building. Just sitting.
“Fish?” Bailey uttered. “Ugh.”
“This is where they gut and clean the fish brought in from all those Alaskan deep sea fishing trips. There’s a freezer in there. I’m sure of it.”
Bailey nodded. “That smell is disgusting.”
I felt a brief chill in my bones as my dream kept coming back to me. Flash freeze. That’s what they do with the halibut caught by guys who paid handsomely to go out on one of the coldest seas in the world and fish for the biggest fish on the planet. They flash freeze the fish after it’s cut up. Flash. Freeze.
That was when I saw it…and her in my mind’s eye.
Tip was in there.
“Isn’t it weird there’s no one around?” Bailey asked. “I mean this place feels like a ghost town.”
Cinder nodded, and then pointed to a rooftop.
Looking up, I saw Taylor, a big shit-eating grin on her face. She bounded off the roof like a cat, landing in a crouch position like some movie. Maybe she was the superhero.
“Snipers out of commission, but they had walkie-talkies, which means someone will be expecting them to check in. We’re really on the clock now, ladies. Time to shift into fifth gear.” Reaching into a pocket on her thigh, she pulled out a ring of lock-picking devices. “If this is the building, let’s get a move on. Ticktock, ticktock, and all that.” Kneeling at the door, she waited for us.
I issued my orders. “Nobody dies until I can talk to them. We need information, and Rafe has it. Leave Rafe to me.”
Taylor turned back to the door and in two seconds, popped the lock. “Ready?”
Cinder had her hands up, ready to fire. Bailey and her pair of fang-bangers were poised and ready to rush in.
I nodded. “Go for it.”
Pulling her gun from her waistband, Taylor nodded and swung the door back before quietly entering, gun poised. “Drop it!” Taylor ordered, drawing down on a tall blond natural, who hesitated a little too long. A fireball from behind me landed at his feet. He jumped back, cussing.
“One more time, Bubba. Fucking drop it now!”
He did and raised his hands in surrender.
“Where’s Rafe?” I asked, stepping closer. I could feel Cinder on my heels. “And I have the best bullshit detector around. One lie. One small lie, and Cinder here will turn you into a crispy critter.”
Cinder tossed a ball of flame up and down in her right hand. I immediately felt blondie’s fear.
“I’m not fucking around. Where is Rafe?”
“Back...back there.”
“In the freezer?”
He started to nod, then his eyes caught the fireball and he shook his head.
